Religious School
Vision
Students of the Temple Emanu-El Religious School will become self-confident, compassionate, and committed citizens who are prepared for the academic and social challenges of the modern world, and who are connected to the Jewish people and the land of Israel.
Children are introduced to enriching cultural, religious, and Hebrew studies. Our school is open for classes most Sundays during the academic year from 10:00a.m. – 12:00p.m. We are fortunate to have highly qualified college age teachers to lead our youth. Our students find the college students to be very approachable and knowledgeable. According to Penelope Besnoy, “The teachers remember what it is like to be a Jewish youth growing up in a southern city. They do an awesome job of making Jewish learning relevant to my life.”
We follow the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) curriculum. Throughout the curriculum, our students are exposed to these key content areas:

Learning Hebrew at Temple Emanu-El of Tuscaloosa
Learning the Hebrew language is among the best ways to gain a sense of having knowledge of and being able to participate in Shabbat and other worship services. Students will find that it is quite a thrill to be able to follow along in the Siddur (prayer book). Understanding Hebrew is the key to experiencing the richness of Jewish prayer. The overall goal of our Hebrew program is for our young people to become comfortable in Siddur (prayer book) reading and to understand the meanings of the key prayers in the Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services. Included also are prayers, blessings, and songs for home observance of Shabbat and the holidays as well as conversational Hebrew. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
